Leap years
Join Parv's birthday party and find out about leap years.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 12), Parv is having a birthday party. The banner says 'Happy Birthday Parv, 29th Feb 2024'. Parv was born on 29 February 2016. Years that have the date 29 February are called leap years.
Look at February in two years. February 2024 has 29 days, but February 2025 has only 28. So 2024 is a leap year and 2025 is not. A leap year has one extra day. Most years have 365 days, so a leap year has 365 + 1 = 366 days.
Leap years come every four years. Count in fours from 2024: going back, 2020 and 2016; going forward, 2028, 2032 and 2036. So the leap years around 2024 are 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032 and 2036.
Parv's birthday is on 29 February, which is only in leap years. He was born in 2016, and he has a real birthday party on his own date in 2020, 2024, 2028 and so on. In the other years there is no 29 February!
