Days of the week

Learn about the seven days of the week.

Your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 12), asks about the days of the week. The 7 days, in order, are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday again. If today is Wednesday, then yesterday was Tuesday and the day before yesterday was Monday. Tomorrow is Thursday and the day after tomorrow is Friday.

A week has 7 days, so the same day comes back every 7 days. The book says July 1 is a Monday. Add 7: July 8 is a Monday. Add 7 again: July 15 is a Monday. Then July 22 and July 29.

What about the same date next month? July has 31 days. 31 days is 4 weeks (28 days) and 3 days more. So August 15 falls 3 days later in the week than July 15. July 15 is a Monday, so August 15 is a Thursday.

August also has 31 days, so September 15 is 3 days after Thursday: a Sunday. September has only 30 days, which is 4 weeks and 2 days. So October 15 is 2 days after Sunday: a Tuesday.

The same day of the week comes back every 7 days; the same date next month falls 3 days later in the week after a 31-day month, and 2 days later after a 30-day month.
