Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar

Reading a clock

Learn to read a clock with Raghu, Raghav and Rani.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 12), three friends, Raghu, Raghav and Rani, read the time on three clocks. Only one of them gets all three right. To read a clock correctly, remember: the short hand shows the hour, and the long hand shows the minutes.

The long hand counts in fives. When it points at 1, it is 5 minutes past the hour; at 2, 10 minutes; at 3, 15 minutes; at 6, 30 minutes; at 7, 35 minutes. At 12, it is exactly on the hour.

On the first clock, the short hand points at 4 and the long hand at 12: it is 4:00. On the second, the short hand is just past 5 and the long hand points at 7: it is 5:35. On the third, the short hand is just past 7 and the long hand points at 3: it is 7:15. Rani read 04:00, 05:35 and 07:15, so Rani is right!

Raghav mixed up the hands. He read the long hand as the hour and the short hand as the minutes, so he got 12:20, 07:25 and 03:35. Raghu mixed up the hands too, and he also forgot to count the minutes in fives: for the first clock he read 12:04, and for the third 03:07.

The short hand shows the hour and the long hand the minutes, and each number the long hand points to means 5 more minutes.
