Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar

Parts of an hour

Learn about parts of an hour, using Akira's morning.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 12), Akira's morning goes from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. One girl says Akira spent one hour. Another girl says, 'No, she spent 60 minutes.' Who is right? Both of them! 1 hour and 60 minutes are the same length of time.

The long hand of a clock goes all the way round once in 1 hour. That is 60 minutes. The book shades parts of a clock face to show parts of an hour.

If the long hand goes halfway round, from the 12 to the 6, that is half an hour: half of 60 minutes is 30 minutes. If it goes a quarter of the way round, from the 12 to the 3, that is a quarter (1/4) of an hour: 15 minutes.

If it goes three quarters of the way round, from the 12 to the 9, that is three quarters (3/4) of an hour. Three quarters is 15 + 15 + 15 = 45 minutes.

1 hour = 60 minutes, so half an hour is 30 minutes, a quarter (1/4) of an hour is 15 minutes and three quarters (3/4) of an hour is 45 minutes.
