Dividing by a 2-digit number

Learn to divide by a 2-digit number.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 13, The Transport Museum), Raahi wonders how many toy-train coaches the 324 children from her school would need. Each coach seats only 14 children. We need 324 ÷ 14.

Take away 10 coaches at a time. 10 coaches seat 10 × 14 = 140 children. 324 - 140 = 184 children are left. Another 10 coaches: 184 - 140 = 44 left. Now 10 coaches would be too many, so take smaller groups. 1 coach: 44 - 14 = 30 left. 2 coaches: 30 - 28 = 2 left. The coaches we filled are 10 + 10 + 1 + 2 = 23.

The 2 children left over are called the remainder. So 324 ÷ 14 = 23 remainder 2. That means 23 coaches are completely full. But the 2 left-over children need a seat too, so for EVERYONE to ride, a 24th coach is needed.

Farzan sees a famous snake boat from Kerala. In a race, 960 people want to row, and each boat is rowed by 64 people. 10 boats take 640 people, leaving 960 - 640 = 320. 5 boats take 5 × 64 = 320, leaving 0. So 10 + 5 = 15 boats are needed, and there is no remainder.

To divide by a 2-digit number, take away 10 groups (or fewer) at a time, add up the groups, and what is left at the end is the remainder.
