Rows and columns on a grid

Play the Grid Game and learn about rows and columns.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 2), Rani and Bholu play the Grid Game. Bholu has a grid of 3 rows and 3 columns: 9 squares in all. Rani gives clues, and Bholu draws each object in the right square.

Rows go across and columns go up and down. On Bholu's grid, the rows are counted from the bottom: row 1 is the bottom row, row 2 is the middle row and row 3 is the top row. The columns are counted from the left: column 1 is on the left, column 2 in the middle and column 3 on the right.

Rani says, 'Draw the ball at the bottom left corner.' Bholu says, 'Okay, it is the first row and first column.' Then: the eraser goes in the top right corner, which is row 3, column 3. The pencil goes in the top left corner, row 3, column 1. The apple goes in row 2, column 2, which is the middle square of the grid. The water bottle goes in row 3, column 2, in the middle of the top row.

So to find a square, count up to the row from the bottom and across to the column from the left.

On the grid, row 1 is at the bottom and column 1 is on the left; find a square by its row and its column.
