Rows and desks
Help find Jagat's cat using rows and desks.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 2), it is activity day, and Jagat's pet cat follows him to school. The cat sits on the classroom window and looks for Jagat. To say where someone sits, we use rows and desks.
Here is the classroom in words. There are 3 rows of desks, with 3 desks in each row. The rows are counted from the front: the first row is nearest the blackboard, then the second row, and the third row is at the back. In every row, the desks are counted from the window: the first desk is next to the window, the second desk is the middle desk, and the third desk is next to the wall.
Now the cat finds Jagat: he is sitting on the third desk of the first row, next to the wall at the front. A blue bag is on the first desk of the first row, by the window. In the second row, Rani sits on the first desk, a red water bottle stands on the middle desk, and an apple is on the third desk. In the third row, a notebook lies on the middle desk.
So to tell where something is, first say which row, then which desk in that row, and say which way you count.
