Regrouping

Circle groups of ten to find a number.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 4), you circle groups of 10 to find a number. 14 ones: circle 10 of them to make 1 ten, and 4 ones are left. So 14 ones = 1 ten + 4 ones = 14. In the same way, 23 ones = 2 tens + 3 ones = 23.

Sometimes there are more than 9 in a place, so we regroup. 1 ten and 27 ones: the 27 ones make 2 more tens and 7 ones. Now there are 3 tens and 7 ones, which is 37. 10 tens and 6 ones: 10 tens make 1 hundred, so this is 1 hundred, 0 tens and 6 ones, which is 106.

35 tens is 350, because 35 tens is 30 tens and 5 tens, and 30 tens is 3 hundreds. 2 hundreds, 13 tens and 7 ones: the 13 tens are 1 hundred and 3 tens. So we have 3 hundreds, 3 tens and 7 ones, which is 337.

The same works with bigger numbers. 12 hundreds, 18 tens and 2 ones: 12 hundreds is 1200 and 18 tens is 180, so the number is 1200 + 180 + 2 = 1382. Remember: no place can hold more than 9. Every group of 10 moves up to the next place.

When a place has 10 or more, regroup: 10 ones make 1 ten, 10 tens make 1 hundred, 10 hundreds make 1 thousand.
