Thousands Around Us
4-digit numbers
Learn to read and write 4-digit numbers.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 4), numbers bigger than 1000 get a new place: Thousands (Th). A 4-digit number has four places, in this order: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones. 1038 is 1 thousand, 0 hundreds, 3 tens and 8 ones. 1100 is 1 thousand and 1 hundred; we read it 'one thousand one hundred'.
The book uses arrow cards. 3452 is made from the cards 3000, 400, 50 and 2. Put together, they give the expanded form: 3000 + 400 + 50 + 2 = 3452. In words it is three thousand four hundred fifty two.
What about 4085? It is made from the cards 4000, 80 and 5. There are no hundreds, so there is no hundreds card. The expanded form is 4000 + 80 + 5, and in words it is four thousand eighty five. But when we write the number, we must put 0 in the hundreds place: 4085. That 0 holds the empty place.
In the book, Ram wrote 7 Thousands 0 Hundreds 2 Tens 4 Ones as 724. That is not correct! 724 is only seven hundred twenty four. The right number is 7024, with 0 keeping the hundreds place. Richa wrote 5 Thousands 6 Hundreds 0 Tens 3 Ones as 563. The right number is 5603.
