Doubling in division

Find out how one division can help you with another.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 9), we find out how one division can tell us the answers to others. We start from 192 ÷ 4 = 48.

Double only the dividend: 384 ÷ 4. There is twice as much to share among the same 4 groups, so each group gets twice as much. The quotient doubles: 384 ÷ 4 = 96.

Double both the dividend and the divisor: 384 ÷ 8. Twice as much is shared among twice as many groups, so each group gets the same as before. The quotient stays the same: 384 ÷ 8 = 48. In the same way, 340 ÷ 34 = 10 tells us that 680 ÷ 68 = 10.

Double only the divisor: 192 ÷ 8. The same amount is shared among twice as many groups, so each group gets half as much. The quotient halves: 192 ÷ 8 = 24.

Always check by multiplying: 8 × 48 = 384 and 4 × 96 = 384. Both are right.

Doubling both the dividend and the divisor keeps the quotient the same (192 ÷ 4 = 48, so 384 ÷ 8 = 48), while doubling only the dividend doubles the quotient (384 ÷ 4 = 96).
