Coconut Farm
Division problems
Read stories and use division to solve them.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 9), many stories need division. Read the story, decide what is being shared or grouped, then divide. Check your answer by multiplying back.
In the hot summer months, Ibrahim sells tender coconuts for ₹35 each and earns ₹8890 in a week. How many did he sell? 8890 ÷ 35: take away 200 × 35 = 7000, leaving 1890. Take away 50 × 35 = 1750, leaving 140. Take away 4 × 35 = 140, leaving 0. So he sold 200 + 50 + 4 = 254 coconuts. He had bought them for ₹20 each, so they cost him 254 × ₹20 = ₹5080, and he earned ₹8890 − ₹5080 = ₹3810 extra.
Three friends share the cost of a picnic equally. They spend ₹157 on snacks and sweets, ₹124 on juice and fruits, and ₹136 on pulav and paratha. First add: ₹157 + ₹124 + ₹136 = ₹417. Then share: ₹417 ÷ 3 = ₹139 each.
Megha packs 15 packets of ragi-oats biscuits, with 8 biscuits in each, for a 4-day trip with 6 people. There are 15 × 8 = 120 biscuits. Shared by 6 people, that is 120 ÷ 6 = 20 each for the whole trip. Over 4 days, that is 20 ÷ 4 = 5 biscuits each day.
Munshi Lal sells vegetables at Sundar Sabzi Mandi and keeps a record book, but his naughty grandson erased some numbers. Potatoes cost ₹20 for 1 kg and he earned ₹2,240 from them, so he sold 2240 ÷ 20 = 112 kg. Green peas: 125 kg for ₹3,125, so 1 kg cost 3125 ÷ 125 = ₹25.
