Exploring Our Neighbourhood

Directions on a map

Draw a map of your neighbourhood with directions, like Navya.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 2), Navya draws a map of her neighbourhood. She finds east from the rising sun, because the sun rises in the east.

On a map, north is shown at the top, south at the bottom, east on the right and west on the left.

On Navya's map, her home is in the middle. The hospital is to the north of her home, the chemist to the east, the bakery to the west and the post office to the south. So on the paper the hospital is at the top, the chemist on the right, the bakery on the left and the post office at the bottom.

When we give someone directions, we use words like left, right, forward and backward, and we name landmarks. A landmark is a place that is easy to spot, such as a park, a shop, a hospital or a bus stop. For example: 'Walk forward to the bus stop, then turn left at the park.'

The sun rises in the east; on a map north is at the top, south at the bottom, east on the right and west on the left.
