Growing up with Nature

Houses from nature

See how people build houses from things found in nature.

This is part of Reena and Amit's story, from your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4). Their village is decorated for the celebration. Amit says the houses look very different from houses in the city, and the decorations on the walls are beautiful.

His mother explains that these houses are made of clay, hay, cow dung and other natural materials. The painting on the wall was done by the children's grandmother, with a dye made by mixing rice flour and water.

Inside the house, Reena and Amit see their grandmother painting on a cloth. She tells them the paint is made from flowers and leaves, and from powdered coloured stones.

India has many art forms that use nature's colours. Gond art is painting on walls with natural colours. The artists paint pictures of nature: trees, animals, birds and people.

The village houses are built from nature's materials — clay, hay and cow dung — and decorated with nature's colours, like rice-flour paint and Gond art.
