Growing up with Nature

The flame of the forest

Travel with Reena and Amit and meet the flame of the forest.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), Reena and Amit go with their family to their village near a forest, for a harvest festival. As they enter the village, they see trees full of bright orange-red flowers.

'What are those flowers called?' Reena asks. Her father smiles and tells her it is a Palash tree.

When the Palash flowers bloom, the whole forest looks reddish-orange from far away, like a fire. That is why Palash is called the 'flame of the forest'.

Many flowers have local names too. In Gujarat, Palash is called Kesuda.

The Palash tree's bright orange-red flowers make the forest look reddish-orange from far away, so it is called the 'flame of the forest'; in Gujarat it is called Kesuda.
