Growing up with Nature

Respecting nature

Learn how people in many parts of India show respect for nature.

People in many parts of India show respect for nature. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), gives some examples.

The Jenu Kurubas are a tribe from Karnataka. Their name comes from the word 'jenu', which means honey. When they collect honey from beehives, they sing songs to say sorry to the bees.

Sacred groves are small patches of forest that local communities protect. The trees and wild animals inside them are kept safe. People gather there to pray and to celebrate the beauty of nature.

Some festivals are linked to plants and animals. At Vat Purnima, people worship the banyan tree. At Hari Jiroti, people plant fruit-bearing trees. The Kaziranga Elephant Festival spreads awareness about elephants.

Communities across India respect nature: the Jenu Kurubas sing sorry to the bees, sacred groves are protected, and festivals honour the banyan, fruit trees and elephants.
