Reading a food label

Learn how to read the label on packaged food.

Packaged food comes with a label. The label tells us important things about the food inside.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 5), there is a label on a jar of honey. It shows the net weight, 400 gram: that is how much honey is inside, without the jar. It shows the date the honey was packed, 08.03.2025. On a label the day comes first, then the month, then the year, so this means 8 March 2025.

The label also says 'Best before: 07.03.2026', which means 7 March 2026. The 'best before' date is also called the expiry date. The food should be eaten before this date.

So always check the label before you buy or eat packaged food.

A food label tells us the net weight, the packing date and the best-before (expiry) date, so we check it before buying or eating packaged food.
