A grain's journey
Follow the journey of a grain from the field to your plate.
Every roti and every plate of rice starts its life as a tiny grain in a field. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 6), shows the journey of a rice or wheat grain in twelve pictures, from the farm to our plate.
In the field, this is the order. First, the farmer sows the seeds. The young plants get sunlight and water. Rain falls on the field. Cattle and manure help the crop to grow, and earthworms work in the soil. A scarecrow guards the growing crop, and the farmer pulls out the weeds.
Then the crop is ripe. The farmer harvests it, and the grain is filled into sacks. The sacks go to a shop, where the grain is sold. At home, the grain is cleaned and cooked. Last of all, a child sits down and eats it.
So the grain on your plate has made a long journey. Many people, animals, water, soil and sunlight have helped it along the way.
