Don't waste food

Find out why every grain is precious, and how not to waste food.

Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 6), says that every grain is precious. Think of the long journey your food has made: the farmer, the cattle, the earthworms, the shopkeeper and the cook all worked to bring it to your plate.

When we waste food, we do not respect the hard work of all the people who helped bring it to us. So we try not to waste even a little.

One easy way is to take only as much food as we need. If someone offers us more than we can eat, we can say 'That is enough, thank you'. We can always ask for a little more later.

Your book asks you to keep a record for a week. After each meal, write 'Yes' and draw a happy smiley if you ate everything, or 'No' and draw a sad face if you left some food.

Every grain is precious, so we take only as much as we need and do not waste food.
