How Things Work
Making a boat
Make a boat that floats, like Meera and Dhruv.
In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 7), it rains, and Meera and Dhruv run out to splash in the water. When the rain stops, Dhruv says, 'Let us make paper boats!' Meera brings some old newspapers.
They put their paper boats in a puddle of rain water. Some boats float properly, sitting up on the water. Others flip over.
Boats can be made from many things. Your book shows a boat made with ice-cream sticks, a boat made of a coconut shell, and boats made using walnut shells. You can also use paper, cardboard, clay and tape.
When you compare boats, you find that some are strong and hard to break, while others break easily. Some tip over easily, while others keep their balance better. A good boat is strong and keeps its balance. Then you can think about how to make your own boat better.
