How Things are Made

Kinds of paper

Learn about the different kinds of paper and their uses.

There are many types of paper, and each has its own use. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 8), names writing paper, newspaper, art paper, cardboard and tissue paper.

Tissue paper is used for cleaning, because it is very thin and soft, and it absorbs water (it soaks it up). Cardboard is thick and hard, so it is used to make boxes for packing things.

There is also a special paper called Braille paper. It has patterns of tiny bumps on it. The patterns stand for numbers, letters and punctuation marks. Visually challenged people, who cannot see well, read and write with Braille by feeling these bumps with their fingers.

Each paper suits its use: tissue paper cleans because it is thin, soft and absorbs water; thick, hard cardboard makes packing boxes; and Braille paper has tiny bumps that visually challenged people feel to read and write.
