How Things are Made
Before paper, and after
Find out what people wrote on before paper.
Paper has not always been around. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 8), tells you that in earlier times, people used other materials to write on. They wrote on cloth, on leaves and on wooden boards.
In India, people also wrote on palm leaves. These palm leaves were called talapatra.
Today we can make paper without cutting trees, too. Your book says that an environment-friendly material like banana fibre can be used to make paper. Such alternatives save trees and protect our environment.
