Water — The Essence of Life

Pond plants

Learn about the plants that grow in a pond.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), the Information Card also tells us about plants that live in and around a pond. They grow in different places.

Reeds are edge plants. They grow along the edges of ponds, and they are tall and grass-like. Lotus and water lily are rooted floating plants: their flowers float on the water, but their roots stay in the pond bed. Water hyacinth is a free-floating plant: it grows fast, floats and spreads across the water.

Your book also has an activity. Put a drop of water on a plain piece of paper, and the water soaks into the paper. Now colour the paper with a wax crayon and put a drop on it. This time the drop stays on top as a round bead!

Many leaves are like that coloured paper. They have a waxy coating that makes them waterproof. It keeps too much water from getting inside the plant, which helps the plant stay healthy and not get damaged.

Reeds grow at the pond's edge, lotus and water lily float with their roots in the pond bed, water hyacinth floats freely and spreads fast, and a waxy coating makes leaves waterproof.
