Water — The Essence of Life
Life in a pond
Discover the animals that live in a pond.
In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), the rain has filled up the pond near the school ground. Afreen calls Jyoti to come and look. They see tiny fish swimming and a small frog sitting on a lotus leaf.
Animals that live in water have special features that help them live there. Fish have fins to swim. Animals that live on land cannot breathe in water.
Your book's Information Card tells us about some pond animals. The dragonfly flies fast, lays its eggs near water and eats mosquitoes. The water scorpion is an insect that lives underwater and breathes using a tail tube. The pond heron is a bird with long, thin legs and a long, pointed beak; it stands very still to catch fish.
The freshwater turtle is a soft-shelled turtle that lives in ponds and rivers. The water snake is harmless; it eats fish and frogs.
