Water — The Essence of Life

Rivers to the sea

Follow India's rivers on a map as they flow to the sea.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), there is a map called 'Our Lifeline — Rivers in India'. It shows some of the major rivers of our country. On the map you can see the rivers flowing in different directions: some flow into the Bay of Bengal and some into the Arabian Sea.

The Bay of Bengal is the sea on the east side of India. The Arabian Sea is the sea on the west side of India.

Activity 7, 'Follow the Flow!', asks about three rivers. The Ganga flows towards the Bay of Bengal. The Godavari also flows towards the Bay of Bengal. The Narmada flows the other way, towards the Arabian Sea.

Why do rivers go different ways? Remember the mustard seeds: water flows down the slopes of the land. The shape of the land decides which way a river flows, and so which sea it reaches.

The Ganga and the Godavari flow towards the Bay of Bengal on India's east side, while the Narmada flows towards the Arabian Sea on the west side, because rivers follow the shape of the land.
