Water — The Essence of Life

Three forms of water

Discover the three forms of water, and whether there is water in the air.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), Jyoti asks: is there water in the air too? And is snow a form of water? The answer to both is yes!

Water has three forms. It can be a liquid, as in rain. It can be a solid, as in ice and snow. And it can be a vapour, as in steam. Water vapour is also in the air all around us, even though we cannot see it.

Your book's activity shows how water changes form. Put some ice cubes in a steel glass. Soon small water droplets form on the OUTSIDE of the glass. They come from the water vapour in the air, which cools on the cold glass and turns back into tiny droplets. After some time, the ice cubes melt and turn into water.

If we heat water, it boils and turns into steam. So water can change into ice and into steam, and it can also come back to its liquid form.

Water has three forms, liquid (rain), solid (ice, snow) and vapour (steam), and it changes from one form to another: ice melts into water, heated water turns into steam, and cooled vapour turns back into droplets.
