Water — The Essence of Life

Groundwater

Find out what happens to rainwater when it soaks into the ground.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), we find out what happens to rainwater when it comes down. Take a glass, fill half of it with soil, and slowly pour water into the soil with a spoon. The water soaks into the soil and sinks down.

The same happens when it rains. Some of the rainwater is soaked up by the soil. This water sinks down through the layers of soil and rocks.

The water that gets stored deep underground is called groundwater.

To get this water out for our use, people dig wells, borewells and tube wells, and put in handpumps. They draw the groundwater up from deep in the ground.

Some rainwater soaks through the soil and rocks and is stored deep underground as groundwater, which we draw out with wells, borewells, tube wells and handpumps.
