Water — The Essence of Life

Helping rain soak in

Learn ways to help rainwater soak into the ground.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), we learn that groundwater can be filled up again by rainwater soaking into the ground. This is called recharging the groundwater.

Rainwater can only soak in where the ground is open. Your book shows three places: a concrete road, a green lawn and a paved area. Only the green lawn lets the rainwater seep into the ground. On the concrete road and the paved area, the water cannot go in.

In cities with many cemented surfaces, rainwater cannot go into the ground easily. This stops the groundwater from getting recharged. Open, uncovered areas let water seep into the ground.

We can help rainwater go back underground with soak pits, ponds and human-made lakes, and by planting more trees.

Open ground and green lawns let rainwater soak in and recharge groundwater, while concrete and paved surfaces stop it; soak pits, ponds, human-made lakes and trees help.
