Flood safety

Learn how to stay safe during a flood.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 2), there is a poster of Flood Safety Tips. It puts the tips in three groups: before a flood, during a flood and after a flood.

BEFORE a flood: stay informed through the local news. Prepare an emergency bag with food, medicines and a flashlight. Know how to evacuate (leave safely) and the safe routes to take. Leave before the flooding starts. In places that flood often, keep useful things at home, like sandbags, a ladder and a rope.

DURING a flood: disconnect the electricity and gas. Do not walk or drive in flood water. Get to higher ground. Follow the evacuation orders. Free the cattle and lead animals to a safer place.

AFTER a flood: avoid touching flood water, and do not swim in it. Do not touch power lines. Do not go home, or to places the flood has damaged, until it is declared safe. Tell your family that you are safe. When you are back home, clean and disinfect the surfaces and things in it.

Before a flood, stay informed, pack an emergency bag and leave early; during a flood, switch off electricity and gas, keep out of flood water and get to higher ground; after a flood, keep away from flood water and power lines and go home only when it is declared safe.
