Journey of a River

Tributaries

Learn what tributaries are, the streams that join a river.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 2), the Godavari tells us it starts out as a small stream. As it moves across the land, rainwater and other streams join it. They make it wider and stronger.

The small streams and rivers that join a bigger river are called its tributaries.

Your book has a map of the Godavari's journey. It shows three of its tributaries: the Manjira, the Indravati and the Sabari. It also shows dams built on the river: the Sriram Sagar Project and the Polavaram Dam.

The map also shows places where wild animals are protected along the river: the Kawal Tiger Reserve and the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary.

Tributaries are small streams and rivers that join a river and make it wider and stronger; the Godavari's include the Manjira, Indravati and Sabari.
