Journey of a River

Rivers that never dry up

Find out why some rivers never dry up.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 2), the Godavari tells us: 'I flow all year round.' A river that flows all year round is called a perennial river. So the Godavari is a perennial river.

Some rivers are different. They flow only when they get water in the rainy season. For the rest of the year they may have little or no water. These are called seasonal rivers.

Later in the chapter, the Godavari says that because it is perennial and flows across the year, it can go on looking after everyone along its way: people, animals and plants.

A perennial river, like the Godavari, flows all year round, while a seasonal river flows only when it gets water in the rainy season.
