The Mystery of Food

Fruits of the season

Visit the market with Disha and learn about fruits of each season.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 3), Disha goes to the vegetable market with her Thatha (grandfather). She watches him carefully examine the fruits and vegetables before he buys them, so that he gets fresh ones.

One day it is raining, and Appa brings home lychees. Disha is delighted: 'Lychees, after almost a year!' Appa explains that lychee is a seasonal fruit, so we have to wait for its season. The whole family shares the fruit happily.

Appa adds that nothing beats their local mangoes. They are so fresh because they did not have to travel far to reach them.

Disha writes Finding #9: fruits taste best when they are eaten in their season, and waiting for them makes the joy greater. Your book gives more examples: amla in winter and jamun in summer.

Fruits taste best when eaten in their season (lychee in the rains, amla in winter, jamun in summer), and local fruits are fresher because they do not travel far to reach us.
