The Mystery of Food

Our teeth

Learn about the different kinds of teeth and what each one does.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 3), Detective Disha wonders what happens to food inside the mouth. She looks in the mirror, opens her mouth wide and says, 'Aaaaah!'

Her Anna tells her that we have different types of teeth for different jobs. Incisors cut. Canines tear. Premolars crush. Molars grind.

Your book has a diagram of the mouth called 'Types of teeth'. In words: the incisors are the flat teeth right at the front. Next to them are the canines, which are pointed. Behind the canines are the premolars. And right at the back are the big molars.

So when you bite into a guava, your incisors cut off a piece, and your molars at the back grind it up. Disha writes Finding #11: different types of teeth have different uses.

We have four types of teeth: incisors (at the front) cut, canines tear, premolars crush and molars (at the back) grind.
