Managing waste

Learn how to sort and manage waste at school.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), the class learns how to manage waste. The first step is to make less of it. We can reduce waste by using only what we need, by reusing things, and by not throwing away useful items.

Even so, some waste is still left, such as food peels, leftovers and paper. We separate it into two kinds. Wet waste is things like fruit and vegetable peels and leftover food. Dry waste is things like biscuit and chocolate wrappers.

Your book's Segregation Game uses boxes in the bin colours: GREEN for wet waste and BLUE for dry waste.

Have you noticed that old newspapers are never thrown into these bins? They are kept aside and given to the traditional recyclers, so they can be used again. That is why the game has a third box, 'Items for recycler'.

First reduce waste (use only what we need, reuse things, keep useful items); then sort the rest into wet waste in the green bin and dry waste in the blue bin, and keep things like old newspapers for the traditional recyclers.
