Our School — A Happy Place

The school explorer team

Join a School Explorer Team and look closely at your school.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), the class forms School Explorer Teams. The team names are: Water watchers, Electricity savers, Waste warriors, Green guardians and Traffic trackers. Before they explore, each team decides what to look for.

Electricity savers check if lights and fans are left on when no one is using them, and if classrooms use natural light. Water watchers look for leaking taps and wasted water, check that water tanks are clean and covered, and look for wet places where mosquitoes could breed.

Waste warriors look for litter, and check whether there are enough dustbins, whether students use them, and whether there are separate bins for food waste. Green guardians look at the trees and plants: who cares for them, where more can be planted, and whether birds and butterflies visit.

Traffic trackers watch the school gate when children arrive and leave. Is there a pedestrian crossing for children? Do vehicles speed in front of the school?

A school explorer team looks for problems like lights and fans left on, leaking taps and wasted water, uncovered or dirty tanks, wet places where mosquitoes breed, litter and too few dustbins, and speeding vehicles with no pedestrian crossing at the gate.
