Our School — A Happy Place

Safe at the school gate

Learn how to stay safe on the road near your school gate.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), Thomas tells the class about a road accident he saw on his way home from school. Mohit says he thinks people do not follow the traffic rules.

Your book agrees: many accidents happen on the roads because people do not follow the traffic rules correctly. It is very important that we know the rules and follow them.

Remember the traffic trackers? They check what happens outside the school gate when children arrive and leave. Is there a pedestrian crossing for children? Do vehicles speed in front of the school? (A pedestrian is a person walking.)

Your book shows a safe school gate. It has a traffic signal to tell vehicles when to stop, a school sign to warn drivers that children are nearby, and a zebra crossing, which is a pedestrian crossing painted in white stripes, where children can cross. And vehicles near a school should never speed.

Many road accidents happen because people do not follow traffic rules; a pedestrian crossing, a traffic signal, a school sign and vehicles that do not speed keep children safe at a school gate.
