Headgear

Explore the many kinds of headgear worn across India.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 5), you think about the many kinds of headgear we see in India — things people wear on their heads. In Rajasthan, men wear a colourful saafa or pagri. In Himachal Pradesh, people wear a topi.

Headgear can tell us where someone is from, what they believe in, or what work they do. It is also a symbol of tradition and honour, especially at weddings and other special occasions.

Headgear is also worn for protection — from heat or cold, or from getting hurt. Soldiers, construction workers, and people working in mines and tunnels wear helmets to protect their heads while they work.

Motorcyclists and cyclists wear road safety helmets, which help prevent serious head injuries. A helmet must always be worn when we ride on a two-wheeler.

Headgear like the saafa or pagri of Rajasthan and the topi of Himachal Pradesh tells where someone is from, what they believe or what they do, and helmets protect people's heads — one must always be worn on a two-wheeler.
