Energy — How Things Work
Fuels
Learn about fuels like petrol and diesel.
Cars and scooters on our busy roads need something to keep running. Fuels such as petrol and diesel are the sources of energy for vehicles — just as food is the source of energy for us.
We use fuel at home too. Cooking gas is a fuel. In some places, people use wood or coal to cook food. But burning wood or coal makes smoke and pollution, so we must use them carefully.
Your book tests fuel with two diyas (lamps). Diya 1 has a cotton wick with no oil. Diya 2 has a cotton wick with oil poured round it. Both are lit, with an adult watching. The oil is the fuel, so the diya with oil burns longer. The dry wick has no fuel to keep its flame going, and soon goes out.
We use different fuels every day — for cooking, for lighting diyas and for running vehicles.
