Energy — How Things Work

What electricity does

Find out what electricity does in our homes.

Many things in our homes need electricity to work. Your book's example is the fan: it blows air, so it uses electricity to make movement. Electricity can be used for movement, and for making sound, light and heat.

Our lives have become easier with electricity. Not only homes and schools but many industries use electricity to run machines. These machines help make many things we need — clothes, toys, books, food, and even scooters and cars. Did you know that even vehicles can run on electricity?

Your book also teaches energy efficiency. Energy efficiency means using less energy to do the same work. This saves resources and reduces waste. For example, an LED bulb gives the same amount of light as an incandescent or a fluorescent bulb, but it uses less electricity.

Electricity gives movement, sound, light and heat and runs the machines that make many things we use; energy efficiency means using less energy for the same work, as an LED bulb does.
