Energy — How Things Work

Clean energy

Learn about clean energy, and why it is better for our air.

Most of the electricity we use comes from burning fuels like coal. But burning coal makes a lot of smoke and harmful gases that pollute the air. This polluted air is not good for our health or for the environment.

There are other ways to make electricity that do not cause pollution. Solar panels capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. Windmills spin with the wind to make electricity. Fast-moving rivers or falling water can also be used to make electricity.

Electricity made from natural sources like the Sun, the wind or water does not pollute the planet with smoke or waste. It is called clean energy. So, whenever we can, we should choose clean sources of energy.

Most electricity comes from burning coal, which pollutes the air; clean energy is electricity made from the Sun, the wind or water, with no smoke or waste.
