Clothes — How Things are Made

Reusing clothes

Find out how people in India reuse old clothes.

Your book says that people in our country rarely throw clothes away. When clothes no longer fit us, we usually give them to a younger brother or sister, or to anyone who can use them.

Sometimes an elder in the family makes something new from old clothes.

There is also an old tradition in our country of making beautiful quilts by joining small pieces of cloth together.

When we pass clothes on or make something new from them, the cloth is used again instead of being thrown away. Less goes to waste, and someone else gets to enjoy it.

We reuse clothes instead of throwing them away: we give them to a younger sibling or someone who can use them, elders make new things from them, and small pieces are joined into quilts.
