Clothes — How Things are Made

Natural and synthetic fibres

Learn the difference between natural fibres and synthetic fibres.

We do not get fibres only from cotton. There are many other natural sources too. Natural fibres come from plants and animals. Your book's list of natural fibres is bamboo, cotton, linen, silk and wool. Cotton and linen come from plants; silk and wool come from animals.

Synthetic fibres are made by people, in factories. Your book's list of synthetic fibres is rayon, nylon, polyester and terylene. Nylon and polyester are made from artificial materials.

We all use things made from both natural and synthetic fibres — clothes, bags, ropes and much more. Look at the label on a shirt: it often tells you which fibre it is made of.

Natural fibres, like cotton, linen, wool and silk, come from plants and animals; synthetic fibres, like nylon and polyester, are made by people in factories.
