Clothes — How Things are Made

Silk

Find out how silk is made by the silk moth.

Silk comes from the cocoon of a small insect called the silk moth. The cocoons are put in hot water, and the silk thread is gently pulled out. It is then made into thread that is used to make silk fabric.

The silk moth goes through a life cycle — the pattern of growth and change of a living thing. The silk moth's caterpillar is also called the silkworm.

Here are your book's six steps, in this order. 1. The silk moth lays eggs. 2. The eggs hatch into tiny caterpillars. 3. The caterpillars eat mulberry leaves and grow big. 4. The caterpillars spin cocoons around themselves. 5. The adult moth comes out of the cocoon. 6. The cycle begins again.

Silk comes from the silk moth's cocoon; its life cycle goes eggs → caterpillars → eating mulberry leaves and growing → spinning cocoons → adult moth → and the cycle begins again.
