Clothes — How Things are Made

The tailorbird

Meet the tailorbird, a tiny bird that stitches its own nest.

Nature is full of amazing things. Did you know that a tiny green bird stitches its own nest? It is the tailorbird.

The tailorbird takes a big leaf. It pokes holes along the edges of the leaf. Then, with its beak, it pulls thread through the holes — the thread is plant fibre or spider silk. This is just how a tailor sews cloth with a needle and thread.

By sewing the edges of the leaf together, the tailorbird makes a green sleeve. It pads the inside to make a soft, safe nest, where it lays its eggs and raises its babies.

The tailorbird pokes holes along a big leaf's edges and, with its beak, pulls plant fibre or spider silk through them to sew the leaf into a soft, safe nest, just as a tailor sews.
