Rhythms of Nature

Signs of rain

Learn the signs in nature that tell us rain is coming.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), small boxes at the bottom of the pages tell us how people read signs in nature that the rains are coming.

In Odisha, when the koel bird (the cuckoo) sings, farmers know that the rains are coming. That is when they start planting their seeds.

Ants give a sign too. When you see ants carrying their eggs to higher ground, it is a natural sign that rain is coming soon.

During the monsoon, the rain floods the burrows of snakes, the holes they live in, so the snakes come out. Your book says this is why Nag Panchami is celebrated: to show respect to nature and to reptiles.

Nature gives signs of rain: in Odisha the koel's song tells farmers to plant seeds, ants carry their eggs to higher ground, and in the monsoon snakes leave flooded burrows — which is why Nag Panchami is celebrated.
