Earth — Our Shared Home

The Earth from space

See the Earth from space through the eyes of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 10), you hear from Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to reach the International Space Station. He said that when he saw the Earth from outside, it looked completely one. No borders could be seen — no states, no countries. We are all part of humanity, he said, and the Earth is our one home.

From high up in space, the Earth looks tiny. You cannot see small details like your city or village. You can only see the broad shapes of land and sea on our blue planet.

Your book also tells you about Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the Indian astronaut who was the first Indian to see the Earth from space. When he was asked how India looked from up there, he replied, 'Saare Jahaan Se Achcha' — the best in the whole world.

From space the Earth looks like one blue planet with no borders, showing only the broad shapes of land and sea; Shubhanshu Shukla called it one home for all of us.
