Happening now

Learn how to talk about things happening right now.

In 'Rama to the Rescue' the characters talk about things that are happening right now, as they speak. 'I am feeling so sleepy.' 'Somebody is trying to get in.' 'They are saying something.' 'Perhaps they are talking about their money.'

Each of these is made in the same way: am, is or are, and then a verb with -ing on the end. On page 29 of your book, Poorvi, this is called the present progressive tense. We use it for an action that is going on at the time of speaking.

Use 'am' with I: I am studying in Grade 6. Use 'is' with one person or thing: my friend is reading a story book. Use 'are' with you, we, they or more than one: we are playing a board game; the teachers are sitting in the staff room.

Your book also shows a park, and you describe it this way. Govind and Anu are playing football. Pema is picking flowers. The birds are flying in the sky.

Watch the spelling: sit becomes sitting, with a double t.

The present progressive tense (am, is or are + verb + ing) tells about an action going on right now: Somebody is trying to get in.
