Adverbs
Learn what adverbs are, words that tell us more about a verb.
A verb is an action word, like listen, call, move or sing. An adverb tells us more about a verb. On page 30 of your book, Poorvi, adverbs answer the question 'How?'
Look at words from 'Rama to the Rescue'. The thief decides he had better listen closely. How does he listen? Closely. The couple say they will call out softly if the boy is in the house, and very loudly if he is in the street. How will they call? Softly, then very loudly. 'Closely', 'softly' and 'loudly' are adverbs.
Many adverbs end in -ly. On page 31 your book asks you to choose an adverb that fits. The car moved smoothly along the highway. The wise old tortoise moved slowly. The ants worked tirelessly, gathering food for the winter. The birds sang sweetly, making everyone happy.
To choose, ask: how is this action done? Then pick the adverb that makes sense with that action.
