Poem words

Learn the new words from the poem.

Your book, Poorvi, has the poem 'The Raven and the Fox' on pages 13 and 14. On page 15 you match some of its words with their meanings. Here they are.

Perched means sat on a branch: at the start of the poem, Mr Raven is perched high up in a tree. A limb is a branch of a tree, so the Raven sits on a limb. A morsel is a small piece of food: that is what the Raven holds in his beak.

Seek means to look for something: the poem says the morsel was the kind of food a fox would go far to seek. Eyed means looked at something with interest: the Fox had eyed the Raven's food all along.

Pride is the feeling that you are better than others: the Raven opens his beak in foolish pride. Woods are a smaller area of forest with trees of a similar kind: the Fox says the birds of the woods would call the Raven King.

Take care with woods and wood. 'The woods' is a small forest; 'wood' on its own is what a tree is made of, the material a carpenter uses.

Picture the scene in order: perched on a limb, morsel in beak, eyed from below, dropped in pride.
