Friendship

Root words and suffixes

Learn about root words, and how suffixes change them.

In 'The Chair', Mario is friendly, and suddenly he sits in mid-air. On page 65 your book, Poorvi, asks you to split words like these into two parts.

The main word is called the root Word. The letters added after it are called a SUFFIX. friendly = friend + ly. suddenly = sudden + ly. talking = talk + ing. carrying = carry + ing. called = call + ed. showed = show + ed.

On page 66 you add a suffix to a root word to make a new word: magic + al = magical, care + ful = careful, help + ful = helpful, wonder + ful = wonderful, laugh + ing = laughing, friend + ship = friendship, courage + ous = courageous.

Your book says: watch the spelling! Sometimes a root word changes a little when a suffix is added. celebrate + tion becomes celebration, not 'celebratetion'. But in courageous the e of courage stays. Always check how the new word is spelt.

A word can be split into a root word and a suffix (friend + ly = friendly); adding a suffix makes a new word, and sometimes the spelling changes (celebrate + tion = celebration).
