What is yoga?

Begin the essay 'Yoga—A Way of Life' and find out what yoga is.

The last text of Unit 4 in your book, Poorvi, is an essay called 'Yoga—A Way of Life' (page 122). It begins by telling us what yoga is.

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice. That means it is for the body, for the mind and for the inner self. It began, or originated, in ancient India.

The word 'yoga' comes from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', which means 'to join' or 'to unite'. The essay says this stands for unity: the mind and the body joined together, thought and action joined together, and harmony (balance) between humans and nature.

Long ago, Sage Patanjali set out the old tradition of yoga in a clear, orderly way in a text called the 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali'. He described yoga as a way to make the mind quiet and free from all distractions (disturbances). Today yoga has become popular all around the world.

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice from ancient India; its name comes from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', to join or unite, and Sage Patanjali described it as a way to make the mind quiet.
